The Criminal Division 11 of the Seoul Western District Court (Chief Judge Moon Byung-chan) sentenced Seo Mo (41), who was arrested and indicted on charges of robbery-murder, corpse disposal, concealment of property, and trespassing, on the 15th. The prosecution had sought the death penalty for Seo in the previous sentencing hearing.
On July 13 of this year, Seo broke into the officetel office of the victim A, a man in his 40s who had worked with him at a securities firm. After a struggle with A, Seo took valuables and killed him using a stun gun, hammer, and knife that he had prepared in advance.
After the crime, Seo accessed the victim’s stock account and sold stocks worth several hundred million won. He then placed the body in a travel bag he had prepared and moved it to a warehouse in Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk, where he disposed of it in a septic tank. During this process, he prepared cleaning tools to erase traces of the crime and even re-papered the walls of the officetel office. Seo was arrested two days after the crime following a report by the victim’s wife. Seo, who was running a doll sales business, had accumulated debts of over 400 million won due to business difficulties. Remembering that the victim had profited from stock investments, Seo tried to borrow money but was refused, which led to the crime.
The court stated, “The defendant committed an extremely cruel and horrific crime by taking the life of an irreplaceable person,” and added, “The victim had resigned from the securities firm and had been dreaming of a life as a private investor for about a week when he was killed by the defendant, who had once shown kindness to him.” It was known that Seo had received help from the victim during his time as an office worker when he was short on credit card payments.
The court continued, “The victim likely ended his life feeling extreme fear and physical and mental pain,” and pointed out, “The pain and sorrow of the bereaved family who lost a young victim, as well as the shock and trauma that the victim’s young children?who cannot understand this crime?will experience as they grow up, are unimaginable.”

However, the court explained the sentencing by saying, “Considering that the defendant stayed in the victim’s office for about 30 minutes before the murder, it seems that he did not have a definite intent to kill but may have had a mindset that if his demands were met, he would not kill.” It added, “It is difficult to conclude that there is a high risk of reoffending or that rehabilitation is impossible, so it is not justifiable to deprive the defendant of his life or permanently separate him from society.”
