"My Nephew Is a Police Officer"... 70-Year-Old Fined for Threatening and Assaulting Police Helping with 'Drunk Return Home'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] A man in his 70s who threatened and assaulted a police officer trying to send him home while he was intoxicated on the street was sentenced to a fine in the first trial.
On the 12th, according to the legal community, Judge Song Seunghun of Criminal Division 12 at the Seoul Central District Court sentenced A (71, male), who was charged with obstruction of official duties, to a fine of 3 million won.
Earlier, A was brought to trial on charges of verbally abusing and assaulting police officer B, who responded to a 112 emergency call and advised him to go home on the evening of June 22 in a street in Gwanak-gu, Seoul.
At the time, A caused a disturbance demanding to be taken home and threatened, "XXX, my nephew is a police officer, if I tell my nephew, you all are dead," while repeatedly raising his fist as if to strike.
The court found A guilty of the charges. Judge Song criticized, "The defendant obstructed the legitimate execution of duty by the police officer handling the 112 emergency call, and the culpability is by no means light."
However, he added, "The defendant is elderly and appears to acknowledge his crime and show remorse. It is difficult to consider the degree of threat, assault, and obstruction of official duties as severe, and it seems the crime was committed impulsively while intoxicated. Taking into account all other sentencing factors, the sentence was determined."
