Two Programmers Picked This Movie... First Ulsan International Film Festival, Recommended Works Revealed
Programmers Shin Min-jae and Kim Jun-kwon Recommend 4 Works Including 'Paris 13th District'
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The first sea of films unfolding in Ulsan, which works did the programmers pick?
At the 1st Ulsan International Film Festival, programmers Shin Min-jae and Kim Jun-kwon recommended four films for the citizens attending the festival.
The recommended works are four films among the 82 films from 20 countries screened at this festival: Paris 13th District, Rhino, The Girl on a Bulldozer, and Hot in Day, Cold at Night.
With new releases delayed due to COVID-19 and fewer films to enjoy, the 'WIP Premiere' section, which showcases the latest works from around the world for the first time in Korea, selected two recommended films: Paris 13th District and Rhino.
Both films vividly portray the struggles and growth dramas of young souls.
Paris 13th District is a new work by master director Jacques Audiard, set in Paris's Chinatown, depicting the intertwined love and friendship of four men and women. The loneliness conveyed beyond the black-and-white screen leads to mutual obsession.
On the lively framework of a romance, the director's distinctive powerful direction and his gaze toward marginalized people can be confirmed.
Paris 13th District can be seen at Megabox Ulsan Theater 1 on December 19 at 5 PM and December 20 at 7 PM.
Rhino depicts the friendship, betrayal, family love, and inevitable destruction experienced by a Ukrainian youth growing into a violent gang member. It is a 2021 Venice Film Festival highlight directed by Oleg Sentsov.
Dynamic acting, beautiful cinematography, and the director's skillful use of genre film conventions lead to confronting profound themes of reflection and salvation.
Rhino can be seen at Megabox Ulsan Theater 1 on December 19 at 7:30 PM and December 20 at 1 PM.
There is also the 'Youth's Gaze' section, featuring films with young perspectives that offer a glimpse into the future of Korean cinema.
Two recommended films, The Girl on a Bulldozer and Hot in Day, Cold at Night, were selected.
This section allows viewers to witness the unique aesthetic experiments presented by emerging directors who will lead the future of Korean cinema.
The Girl on a Bulldozer tells the story of Hye-young, a troubled girl who frequently visits court due to assault incidents, whose life completely changes after her father's sudden traffic accident.
As she resolves the problems her father left piled up like a mountain, she falls into the abyss of despair and transforms into a revolutionary in a world of adults urging surrender and compromise.
The Girl on a Bulldozer will be screened on December 18 at 7:30 PM at Megabox Ulsan Theater 1.
Hot in Day, Cold at Night is a film in which director Park Song-yeol and actress Won Hyang-ra, who are a real-life married couple, play the lead couple themselves.
This 2021 independent film, a hot topic in the indie film scene, makes viewers reconsider the meaning of cinema through sincerity, humor, and concise formal beauty.
Hot in Day, Cold at Night will be screened on December 19 at 8 PM at Megabox Ulsan Theater 3.
The 1st Ulsan International Film Festival will be held from December 17 to 21 at major venues including Megabox Ulsan and Ulsan Culture & Arts Center.
Various side events for audiences will also take place, such as a 'Master Class' with director Kim Ji-woon, a 'Cinema Class' lecture by director Lee Myung-se, street performances, and experiential events.
