Gwangju Seo-gu Hosts 'Elderly Autobiography Publication Celebration'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City held the ‘2021 Elderly Autobiography Publication Ceremony’ on the 8th, where the overall lives of the elderly can be viewed in a single book.

According to Seo-gu on that day, the elderly autobiography publication ceremony has been held annually since 2015, and this year marked the sixth event.

The elderly autobiography writing support project promoted by Seo-gu is a program that supports the production of autobiographies describing the lives of ordinary elderly neighbors.

It also aims to share the knowledge and experiences that the elderly have acquired throughout their lives with descendants and society, and to spread a new cultural movement of organizing life stories into books throughout society.

Seo-gu has publicly recruited elderly residents aged 65 or older who have lived in the district for more than one year, and since May, a total of 10 participants have received writing guidance from professional instructors and published their autobiographies.

Park Jong-min, an elderly participant who published an autobiography, said, “I hope that when my descendants, siblings, relatives, and friends who know me read the record of my eighty-plus years of life in the future, they will remember me as someone who lived diligently.” He added, “I lived my life to the best of my ability under the given circumstances, so I want to urge my beloved children to live the same way.”

A Seo-gu official said, “It was a meaningful time for ordinary elderly people to gain a sense of fulfillment and pride in life by publishing their stories as books, and it seems to have been a good opportunity for descendants and society to share the knowledge and experiences of the elderly.” He added, “We will continue to support the elderly autobiography writing project and promote various other projects in the future.”
