According to Muan Police on the 6th, the owner was identified as Ms. A (female, in her 70s) residing in Mokpo, and it was investigated that her son unknowingly discarded the money bag last month.
The police found a transaction statement containing a withdrawal slip and the address of a building inside the bag, and upon requesting assistance from a financial institution, they located the owner.
However, the police explained that returning the money was more difficult. Since Ms. A has been hospitalized since last month, the police tried to return the money after a phone call with her son, Mr. B, but he was mistaken for a victim of voice phishing and was turned away.
This was because confirmation calls came from the bank about a large withdrawal, and the police visited to meet, making it look exactly like a voice phishing scam.
Mr. B was able to have a difficult phone conversation with the Muan police while on his way to report to a police substation in Mokpo, and he was able to clear up the misunderstanding by meeting the person in charge directly at the substation.
The money was handed over to the son and family at the Muan Police Station on the morning of the 6th.
The story of how the money bag from the Mokpo house ended up on Seungdalsan Mountain is that Ms. A, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, also had mild dementia symptoms accompanied by hoarding behavior.
Last month, Ms. A was hospitalized, and her son Mr. B took the opportunity to thoroughly clean his mother’s house. During this process, he poured herbal medicine and soil in a plastic bag beside the road on Seungdalsan Mountain and collected the plastic bag as it was.
However, the money bag was also discarded along with the pile of herbs and soil. Later, Ms. A told her son that she had lost the money, but he ignored it, thinking it was due to her dementia symptoms, according to the son’s explanation.
The police explained, “There was no doubt as the son directly pointed out the place where he discarded it, so the money bag was handed over.”
Meanwhile, Ms. A’s family expressed their gratitude to the Muan County Forest Firefighting Team and reportedly gave a small reward to Mr. Jeong, who found the money.
