Magnitude 4.8 Earthquake Occurs Near Japan's Akuseki Island
[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] Seismic activity has resumed around Akuseki Island in the Tokara Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture, located between Kyushu in southern Japan and Okinawa.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency on the 5th, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 (estimated) and a focal depth of 20 km occurred around Akuseki Island at approximately 11:14 a.m. that day.
According to observations by the Japan Meteorological Agency, more than 90 perceptible earthquakes were recorded around the island from the afternoon of the previous day to the morning of the 5th. Perceptible earthquakes refer to those that can be clearly felt by people as well as detected by seismographs.
The Tokara Islands, where Akuseki Island is located, is a region where active seismic activity occurs periodically. Akuseki Island, with a resident population of about 60 and an area of 7.42 km², has no airport and can only be accessed by boat.
