‘Jeonju Sports Complex’ to Feature a ‘Garden Forest’!
Jeonju City Begins Design Service for Creating a Garden Forest at Jeonju Sports Complex
[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Hanho] Jeonju City has taken the first step to create a ‘Garden Forest’ at Jeonju Sports Complex.
On the 25th, Jeonju City held a ‘Design Service Kick-off Meeting for the Creation of the Garden Forest at Jeonju Sports Complex’ attended by Mayor Kim Seung-su, Chief Landscape Architect Choi Seon-hyun, and related contractors.
Jeonju City is promoting the ‘Citizen’s Forest 1963’ project to return the Jeonju Sports Complex, built in 1963 with citizens’ donations, back to the citizens through site regeneration.
According to the city, a total of five forests will be created at the sports complex.
These include the Garden Forest, Gourmet Forest, MICE Forest, Art Forest, and Play Forest.
The first to be constructed, the ‘Garden Forest,’ is a large-scale themed forest project on approximately 4,100㎡ of land next to the sports complex’s baseball field, including the cleaning vehicle garage and the relocated archery range site.
A total project cost of 2.7 billion KRW is expected to be invested by the end of next year.
At the kick-off meeting, in-depth discussions were held to prepare a sound and sustainable forest design plan based on the basic goal of creating a ‘Citizen’s Forest where ecology and culture coexist.’
The Garden Forest is envisioned as a garden of memories layered with the passage of time and a harmonious garden where citizens and children can gather. The overall space is proposed to be composed of three themes: △Garden capturing the landscape △Flower hill forest △Path embracing the yard as the design strategy.
Specifically, the ‘Garden capturing the landscape’ will include a field garden, mirror pond, ground fountain, and stone wall path; the ‘Flower hill forest’ will feature a rain garden, sunken garden, hill garden, tree-lined street, and violet garden; and the ‘Path embracing the yard’ will be filled with a white garden, hill path, and a wide yard.
Going forward, Jeonju City plans to collect opinions from the Citizen’s Forest 1963 expert advisory group and citizen participation group over two months, reflect the suggestions made at the meeting, produce a complete design service result, and then start construction to complete the project by the end of next year.
Mayor Kim Seung-su of Jeonju said, “Starting with the ‘Garden Forest,’ followed by the Play, Art, Gourmet, and MICE forests, a vast forest will be formed in the city center, reviving it as a cultural and relaxation space for citizens.” He added, “We will devote all our efforts to fully returning the sports complex site to the citizens through the construction of the Exhibition Convention Center, hotel, Korean Cultural Heritage Content Experience Exhibition Hall, and the Municipal Art Museum.”
Meanwhile, Jeonju City is also carrying out related procedures for the Art Forest and MICE Forest projects in addition to the Garden Forest.
Feasibility studies are underway for the Korean Cultural Heritage Content Experience Exhibition Hall and Jeonju Municipal Art Museum, which will be built on the sports complex site, and feasibility studies by the Local Administration Research Institute are being conducted ahead of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s local finance central investment review for the Exhibition Convention Center, hotel, and department store construction projects.
Additionally, compensation for the land included in the replacement facilities for the sports complex, such as the athletics stadium and baseball field, has been completed, and detailed design services are currently underway.
