Yongsan-gu '2021 Sarang's Kimjang Sharing' (18,000 Boxes) Begins
Purchase of 86 Tons of Finished Products in 18,000 Boxes of 8kg Considering COVID-19, 20-35 Volunteers per Dong Deliver Kimjang Kimchi
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yongsan-gu (Mayor Seong Jang-hyun) will hold the '2021 Love Kimchi Sharing' event over three days from the 9th to the 11th at each dong Community Security Council.
The quantity is 10,800 boxes of 8kg each, totaling 86 tons. This is an increase of 265 boxes (2 tons) compared to last year. Namyeong-dong has the largest amount with 1,417 boxes, followed by Huam-dong with 1,137 boxes, and Cheongpa-dong with 1,071 boxes.
The budget required is 340 million KRW. The Yongsan Welfare Foundation (Chairman Lee Sang-yong) supports the costs, and the 16 dong Community Security Councils each signed purchase contracts. The contracted companies were limited to businesses from the district’s sister cities (Cheongju, Yeongwol), which are experiencing difficulties in the local economy due to the impact of COVID-19.
As in the previous year, considering the COVID-19 situation, the mixing process is omitted. Each dong recruits 20 to 35 volunteers to deliver the kimchi. In some dongs, private sponsorship items such as daily necessities, winter supplies, and food and beverages will also be distributed along with the kimchi.
Along with small-scale subsidiary events in each dong, a commemorative ceremony will be held in accordance with the phased return to daily life.
On the 9th, Hannam-dong will hold a kimchi-making demonstration event with the participation of about 30 multicultural families and foreigners. On the 10th, Hyochang-dong and Wonhyo 1-dong will hold a side dish sharing event hosted by the Saemaul Women's Association. On the 11th, Ichon 2-dong will hold a small concert as a pre-event for the kimchi delivery commemorative ceremony.
Mayor Seong Jang-hyun plans to visit the sites of all 16 dongs in the order of Yongsan 2-ga - Huam - Hangang-ro - Itaewon 2 - Itaewon 1 - Hannam (Day 1), Namyeong - Hyochang - Wonhyo 1 - Wonhyo 2 - Yongmun (Day 2), Cheongpa - Ichon 2 - Ichon 1 - Seobinggo - Bogwang-dong (Day 3) to encourage the volunteers.
On the second day of volunteer encouragement (the 10th), he will visit the home of the oldest senior citizen in Yongmun-dong, Lee Soon-ja (pseudonym, 108 years old), to deliver kimchi and check on her well-being.
