[Asia Economy Reporter Jo Gang-wook] Hyundai Engineering & Construction announced that it held the awards ceremony for the ‘2021 Hyundai E&C Technology Contest’ on the 28th, which was organized to lead win-win cooperation and the advancement of future construction technology.
Considering the COVID-19 situation, the ceremony was conducted online in a non-face-to-face manner, with about 100 participants including Hyundai E&C executives and employees and contestants of the Hyundai E&C Technology Contest.
First launched in 2008 and now in its 14th year, the ‘Hyundai E&C Technology Contest’ is the first and top construction technology contest held by a domestic construction company in Korea. Applications were accepted through the Hyundai E&C website from June 1 to August 10, receiving a total of 157 technology ideas from 141 domestic companies, universities, and research institutions.
The submitted ideas were evaluated based on criteria such as idea appropriateness, development necessity, economic feasibility, and creativity, resulting in the selection of 15 award-winning works. The awarded works included ▲9 cost reduction technologies (5 civil engineering, 3 architecture and housing, 1 plant) ▲3 smart construction technologies ▲3 eco-friendly technologies. Among these, 1 technology was selected as the ‘Best Technology’ and 4 technologies as ‘Excellent Technologies.’
The ‘Best Technology’ was awarded to the Korea Institute of Science and Technology’s ‘Nitrogen Reduction Water Treatment Technology Using Composite Catalysts,’ which removes pollutants in water through low-voltage electricity and catalysts. Compared to existing microbial treatment technologies, this technology simplifies the treatment process and can reduce the cost of treating water pollutants by about 20% or more.
In addition, four institutions including Set ENG Co., Ltd.’s ‘Thermochemical Sludge Solubilization Technology’ were selected as ‘Excellent Technologies,’ and ten institutions including Kyung Hee University’s ‘Carbon Storage Simulator and Carbon Storage Construction Technology Development for Achieving Carbon Neutrality at Construction Sites’ received encouragement awards.
Universities and research institutions selected through the contest will receive research funding and R&D cooperation support through consultations with Hyundai E&C’s Technology Research Institute, while small and medium-sized enterprises will receive technology development support through the win-win growth cooperation fund. Furthermore, construction sites necessary for verifying technology ideas will be provided to test their effectiveness, and if proven effective after verification, opportunities for commercialization will also be offered.
