Jeonju City Council Member Lee Yun-ja Receives Excellence Award at the 4th Korea Women's Legislative Awards

[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Lee Yun-ja (Proportional Representative), a member of the Jeonju City Council, received the Excellence Award in the Ordinance Enactment and Amendment category at the ‘4th Korea Women’s Legislative Awards’ held on the 29th at the Ulsan Exhibition & Convention Center.

The Korea Women’s Legislative Awards are hosted by the Local Autonomy Research Institute Co., Ltd. and organized by Monthly Local Government and internet news Local Government tvU. The awards recognize local council members at the basic and metropolitan levels who have excellently contributed to the development of local councils and legislative activities.

Councilor Lee Yun-ja was recognized for her contribution to promoting a dignified life, rights enhancement, and community integration for people with mental illnesses by enacting the ‘Jeonju City Ordinance on Support for the Independence of People with Mental Illnesses,’ which stipulates necessary matters for guaranteeing rights and supporting independence.

When initiating the ordinance, Councilor Lee held public hearings with people with mental illnesses, their families, and related parties, and based on field-centered opinion gathering procedures, prepared an effective ordinance suited to local realities.

Based on this ordinance, Jeonju City has expanded the mental illness independence support project into a community-integrated care project for people with mental illnesses, achieving various outcomes such as increased social participation activities, increased use of mental rehabilitation facilities, and strengthened positive functions of families of people with mental illnesses.

Councilor Lee said, “Since mental illness is often excluded from the community due to social prejudice and discrimination, social interest and institutional support are necessary. As the ordinance created together with citizens has led to good results, I will actively carry out legislative activities to discover policies for the region and citizens, as well as engage in legislative activities that communicate closely with citizens on the ground.”
