The program, held on the 23rd at the ‘English Room and Dream Tree Room’ of Imja Elementary School located in Imja-myeon, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, was conducted as customized classes from 1st to 6th grade under the theme ‘What are AI (Artificial Intelligence) and SW (Software)? And how will future society change?’
The 88 students who participated in the program completed the AI·SW Education Festival training tailored to their individual levels together with Professor Cho Young-joo of Chosun University and the faculty of the SW-Centered University Project Group.
This program was conducted as part of expanding the base of software and artificial intelligence education to AI·SW marginalized groups and schools in underserved areas. It also aimed for lifelong education and is continuously operated to improve computational thinking skills in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
Through the program, students are expected to enhance their understanding of AI and SW, motivate career exploration, and improve their thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Professor Cho Young-joo said, “Due to the small size of the school in a remote island area with only 88 students, to see the robots presented in textbooks, students usually have to go on external field trips. However, due to the recent COVID-19 situation, opportunities for external experiences have not been provided, making it difficult to have hands-on experiences. At the request of the teachers who wanted to provide AI·SW education opportunities to all students, we held the 2021 Imja Elementary AI·SW Education and Festival.” He added, “Seeing the students happily focus on robots that move according to commands they input made me feel the significance of preparing the festival and traveling a long distance to provide education. We will continue to prepare educational content and strive to meet more students in schools so that AI·SW capability gaps do not occur among students in AI·SW marginalized areas.”
Lee Young-ran, principal of Imja Elementary School, said, “It was a valuable experience for our students to participate in this AI·SW Education Festival, and above all, it was a precious time to see and touch various robots that are not easily seen and to try coding them directly.” She added, “It was also a meaningful time for teachers to have new experiences, and we hope that next year as well, the SW-Centered University Project Group at Chosun University will continue to provide good opportunities for various robot experiences.”
