Announcement of Award-Winning Works in the Sancheong-Hamyang Incident Youth Literary Contest
Grand Prize in Poetry Category Awarded to Hayejin for 'Jirisan-ui Geurimja, Gyeonbyeokcheongya' and Others Selected
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] The award-winning works of the ‘7th Sancheong-Hamyang Incident Youth Literary Contest,’ held to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Sancheong-Hamyang Incident this year, have been selected.
Sancheong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, announced on the 22nd that the judging committee for this contest held a meeting and selected a total of 21 works as award winners.
This contest was organized to commemorate the spirits who were unjustly sacrificed during the incident and to properly inform youth of the truth of the incident, thereby raising awareness of the importance of peace and human rights.
The contest, held from July 15 to October 8, received about 70 submissions nationwide.
The judging panel, consisting of five judges including the Sancheong Writers' Association and the bereaved families' association, selected the winners based on criteria such as relevance to the theme, excellence, originality, and creativity of the works.
The grand prize in the poetry category was awarded to Ha Ye-jin, a second-year student at Geoje Sangmun High School, for her work ‘The Shadow of Jirisan, Gyeonbyeokcheongya.’ The grand prize in the prose (essay) category went to Min Ye-jin, a second-year student at Masan Jeil Girls' Middle School, for her essay ‘My Thoughts on the Sancheong-Hamyang Incident.’
Additionally, the poetry category’s top excellence awards were given to Son Joo-hye, a second-year student at Yongin Heungdeok High School, for ‘The Child Erasing Sadness with an Eraser,’ and Jeong Ji-hwan, a first-year student at Sancheong High School, for ‘Wind.’ In the prose (essay) category, the top excellence awards went to Son Seo-hee, a second-year student at Deoksan High School, for ‘Their Tears,’ and Kim Ho-yeon, a third-year student at Suwon Sannam Middle School, for ‘May There Never Be Any More Unjust Sacrifices.’ In total, 21 winners were selected, including six excellence awardees and nine encouragement awardees in each category.

Writer Min Su-ho, who participated in the judging, said, “This year’s literary contest saw participation from many youths nationwide, and I could feel their pure passion,” adding, “I hope that through this contest, incidents involving the sacrifice of innocent civilians like the Sancheong-Hamyang-Geochang Incident, which has now been 70 years, will become better known to more people.”
