Samsung Heavy Industries Advances Autonomous Navigation Era with Digital Twin Technology
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 20th that it has obtained the basic certification for 'Digital Twin READY for SVESSEL CBM & S-Fugas' from Lloyd, a British classification society.
This certification signifies that Samsung Heavy Industries is ready to apply digital twin technology to its smart ship applications, the fault diagnosis system (SVESSEL CBM) and the LNG fuel supply system (S-Fugas).
Digital twin is a technology that replicates physical objects and environments existing in the real world identically in a virtual space, and it is recognized as a core technology for autonomous ships aiming for unmanned operation.
The fault diagnosis system is a smart ship application that remotely monitors vibration and current signals of key equipment operating on an actual ship in a virtual space, diagnoses their condition, and establishes maintenance plans in advance to improve equipment operation efficiency. Similarly, the LNG fuel supply system enables quality improvement of the system by simulating various liquefied natural gas conditions and fuel supply parameters in a virtual space to find the optimal operation model.
In fact, Samsung Heavy Industries plans to apply the S-Fugas Digital Twin to an 110,000-ton LNG dual-fuel propulsion crude oil carrier currently under construction at the Geoje shipyard, aiming to reduce ship sea trial time and costs as well as optimize the system.
