Gwangju City Council Enacts 'Intellectual Property Education Ordinance' to Foster Creative Convergence Talents

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Metropolitan Council is drawing attention by enacting the ‘Intellectual Property Education Ordinance’ to proactively respond to future changes for students in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution and to foster creative convergence talents who contribute to national and social development.
The Gwangju Metropolitan Council announced on the 18th that the ‘Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education Intellectual Property Education Support Ordinance’ bill, which was primarily proposed by Jeong Muchang, a Gwangju city council member (Democratic Party of Korea·Gwangsan 2), was approved at the plenary session on the 18th.
The ordinance stipulates the superintendent’s responsibility to prepare comprehensive policies for systematic intellectual property education targeting students, including the annual establishment and implementation of intellectual property education plans, various support for students’ intellectual property creation activities, and the designation and operation of leading schools to generalize and spread intellectual property education.
With the enactment of this ordinance, the concept, scope, and methods of intellectual property education have been legislated, which is expected to strengthen students’ capabilities regarding new intellectual property rights, whose importance is increasing in connection with national growth strategies and educational policy promotion.
Councilor Jeong said, “Although the importance of intellectual property education, which exercises creativity in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution and post-COVID-19 era to legalize and utilize new ideas, is increasing, intellectual property education at the school level is still insufficient. I proposed this ordinance to proactively respond to future changes in line with national policies and to foster creative convergence talents who contribute to national and social development.”
He added, “At the school level, we will actively strive to raise students’ awareness of intellectual property so that Gwangju’s students can lead future society and grow into talents who contribute to national and social development by revitalizing intellectual property education.”
Meanwhile, councilors Kim Jeomgi, Im Miran, Gin Dongchan, Lee Gyeongho, Hwang Hyuntaek, and Kim Nayun participated as co-proposers of this ordinance.
