Jeonju City Council Member Lee Yoon-ja, "Active Promotion Needed for Establishment of Mental Disability Welfare Center"
[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] There has been a call to actively promote the establishment of a welfare center for the mentally disabled to address welfare blind spots in the Jeonju area.
Lee Yoon-ja, a member of the Jeonju City Council (Democratic Party of Korea, proportional representation), emphasized in a 5-minute free speech during the 4th plenary session of the 385th extraordinary meeting, "There is a need to proactively establish and operate a welfare center for the mentally disabled in Jeonju to resolve welfare blind spots for the mentally disabled."
Councilor Lee stated, "The Mental Health Welfare Act specifies the welfare obligations of the state and local governments regarding the recovery and independence of the mentally disabled, including welfare service development, employment and vocational rehabilitation, and lifelong education support, but actual benefits are almost nonexistent," adding, "Establishing and operating a welfare center for the mentally disabled is necessary as a solution to these issues."
Lee added, "If Jeonju City activates and operates a welfare center for the mentally disabled, it can eliminate discrimination against mental disabilities and provide services that meet individual needs and desires rather than uniform services," and requested, "I hope the city will establish a welfare support system at the regional level to enhance its status as a city without discrimination and a leading city in integrated care."
