US FDA Grants First Approval for E-Cigarettes: "Less Toxic Than Regular Cigarettes"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seo So-jung] The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved an electronic cigarette product for the first time.
According to foreign media on the 12th (local time), the FDA approved the electronic cigarette device and liquid cartridges manufactured by RJ Reynolds' e-cigarette brand 'Vuse.'
In a statement, the FDA said that analysis of the data showed that Vuse's toxicity is much lower compared to conventional cigarettes. It also explained that Vuse's e-cigarettes help smokers quit smoking or significantly reduce their smoking amount.
With the FDA's first approval of an e-cigarette product, changes are expected in the e-cigarette market as well.
In September last year, the FDA instructed all e-cigarette manufacturers in the U.S. to submit data to review the smoking cessation aid effects, and more than 500 companies submitted evaluation applications.
