Establishment of Ministerial-Level Council in Disaster Safety Sector and Discussion on Potential Cooperation Areas
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 11th that it will jointly hold the "1st Korea-ASEAN Disaster Management Committee (ACDM+ROK)" with the ASEAN Secretariat on the 12th.
The Korea-ASEAN Disaster Management Committee was established as a policy dialogue channel to promote cooperation between Korea and ASEAN with the goal of substantially reducing losses of human lives and social, economic, and environmental assets caused by disasters.
At this meeting, a memorandum of understanding on Korea-ASEAN cooperation in disaster safety will be adopted, and cooperation areas such as flood prevention will be discussed. In particular, through the memorandum of understanding, consensus will be formed and support declared for the establishment of a "Korea-ASEAN Ministerial-level Disaster Management Meeting" to secure implementation capacity and strengthen evaluation in the disaster safety cooperation field.
In addition, detailed cooperation areas in disaster safety will be introduced, including Korea's flash flood forecasting and warning system, an integrated disaster management system utilizing digital technology, and educational projects to strengthen the capacity of disaster management officials. As a follow-up measure, the methods and timing for promoting detailed implementation tasks will be gradually specified through consultation with the ASEAN Secretariat.

Minister Jeon Hae-cheol expressed hope that through this meeting, based on the "ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER)," it will contribute to building a safer and more sustainable ASEAN community, and stated, "If the Korea-ASEAN Ministerial-level Disaster Management Meeting is established, it will be a groundbreaking turning point as a high-level policy dialogue platform to enhance mutual cooperation in disaster safety between Korea and ASEAN countries."
