McDonald's Wins Grand Prize at the 2021 National Employer Training Competition
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] McDonald’s Korea announced on the 8th that it received the Minister of Employment and Labor Award, the grand prize in the large and medium-sized enterprises category, at the ‘2021 National Best Practices Competition for Employer Vocational Competency Development Training’ in recognition of the excellence of its employee training program.
The ‘National Best Practices Competition for Employer Vocational Competency Development Training,’ held annually by the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Human Resources Development Service of Korea to mark the Month of Vocational Competency Development, is a competition designed to discover and share outstanding employee training program cases from companies participating in ‘employer training’ and to encourage employers’ vocational competency training. This year, a total of 16 awards were given across three categories: large and medium-sized enterprises, small and medium-sized enterprises, and new technology training.
At this competition, McDonald’s was recognized for excellence throughout the entire process of course design, operation, and outcomes by linking its self-developed training course, the ‘Workshop for Store Managers,’ with employer training for its employees, winning the grand prize, the Minister of Employment and Labor Award.
McDonald’s has been implementing employer training programs for over 20 years, investing a total of 25,000 hours of education annually for about 1,500 employees, striving to discover and nurture outstanding talent. Since the implementation of this program, McDonald’s explained that positive results have been confirmed, including improved employee satisfaction, reduced turnover rates, and business performance improvements.
In addition to employer training, since 2018, McDonald’s has been operating the ‘University-Linked Work-Study Dual System’ program for store employees, which is conducted under the supervision of the Ministry of Employment and Labor. This program supports excellent employees in developing their careers as foodservice industry experts after employment while enabling them to pursue university education through the work-study dual system and obtain a bachelor’s degree. This year, seven employees enrolled in university through this program, and currently, 11 employees are enrolled to obtain their bachelor’s degrees.

A McDonald’s Korea official said, “It is especially meaningful to receive this award as it is a program developed independently by McDonald’s Korea, not a global-level education program, achieving high satisfaction and active participation from domestic employees and gaining recognition for its excellence externally.” He added, “Going forward, McDonald’s will continue to support employees to enhance their expertise and grow continuously as a responsible global company, thereby providing better services to customers.”
