Hanwha Total Hosts 'Walking Event with Family'
Donation of 10 Million Won for Desertification Prevention Forest Fund
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Hanwha Total conducted an eco-friendly social contribution activity to create a desertification prevention forest using the number of steps donated through a non-face-to-face walking contest held in celebration of Hanwha Group's founding anniversary.
Hanwha Total announced on the 7th that it had donated 10 million KRW to the Blue Asia Foundation, an international environmental protection organization, to create a desertification prevention forest.
The funds donated by Hanwha Total this time were raised through the number of steps collected during the "Walking Contest with Family," held over about four weeks from September 6 via the mobile application "BigWalk."
This walking contest was conducted in the form of an online sports event to overcome COVID-19 blues while creating forests in desertification areas amid the global climate change crisis, receiving great responses from participants.
In particular, the scope of participants was expanded to include not only employees but also their families and the general public, adding significance. Many showed interest in the purpose of the walking contest, which is to donate steps to plant trees in desertification areas and save the global environment. A total of 10,319 people participated, including Hanwha Total employees and their families as well as over 9,000 general participants, donating 290 million steps and exceeding the contest goal of 200 million steps.
The 290 million steps correspond to a distance of 145,000 km, and if this distance had been traveled using carbon-emitting transportation, it would be equivalent to planting about 5,300 30-year-old pine trees.
The donation delivered to the Blue Asia Foundation through this walking contest will be used to plant trees in areas such as Mongolia, where desertification is progressing due to climate change, to create the "Hanwha Total Forest" and restore ecosystems.

Meanwhile, Hanwha Total's non-face-to-face walking contest was planned as part of the results of the "Idea Contest to Overcome COVID-19 Blues" held last year to help employees work in a more enjoyable environment amid the COVID-19 situation. Since this year's non-face-to-face walking contest received great responses, Hanwha Total plans to operate it as a regular event so that more people can participate to maintain their health and contribute to protecting the global environment.
