European Medicines Agency Approves Booster Shots for Individuals Aged 18 and Over
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has approved booster shot vaccinations for individuals aged 18 and over.
On the 4th (local time), the EMA announced that its Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) concluded that booster shots can be considered for those aged 18 and over who are six months past their second dose.
For immunocompromised individuals such as organ transplant patients, it was determined that they can receive a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine booster shot starting 28 days after their second dose.
The EMA explained, "This is based on studies showing that additional doses increased the ability of immunocompromised organ transplant patients to produce COVID-19 antibodies," adding, "Booster shots are expected to enhance immunity in some patients."
Following this recommendation, EU member states can individually decide on administering booster shots. Currently, Germany, Italy, and France are administering booster shots to high-risk groups.
