Residents of Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, Directly Identify 'Welfare Agendas'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Residents of Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim Samho) have taken the initiative to directly identify welfare agendas to create a better village for everyone to live in.
According to Gwangsan-gu on the 4th, each neighborhood formed a Village Welfare Planning Committee to promote agenda discovery through resident needs surveys, meetings, and resident preference surveys.
Based on this, village assemblies and village welfare plan proclamation ceremonies to select projects to be implemented next year have been held recently in succession.
The day before, residents of Sinchang-dong held a village welfare plan proclamation ceremony and selected three welfare agendas: the “Side Dish Sharing Project,” which delivers side dishes to care neighbors such as elderly living alone and checks on their well-being; the “Sinchang Laundry Blanket Washing Support Project,” which provides a one-stop welfare service from blanket collection to washing and delivery; and the “Birthday Kit Delivery Project,” which delivers birthday packages including seaweed soup, rice cakes, and fruits to vulnerable groups celebrating their birthdays.
Earlier, on the 30th of last month, the Imgok-dong Village Welfare Planning Committee held a village assembly at the Imgok Welfare Culture Center and decided on “Supulgol Kkalkkeumi,” a welfare agenda supporting laundry for elderly households and checking on their well-being.
This agenda reflects the reality of rural villages where elderly residents without vehicles face difficulties handling large laundry items.
Additionally, the Unnam-dong Village Welfare Planning Committee selected “Today is the Youngest Day” as a project to be promoted next year, which involves taking elderly residents who have difficulty going out on a train outing.
The final selected village welfare agendas are expected to be implemented as year-round projects by each neighborhood’s local social security council next year.
A Gwangsan-gu official said, “We were able to confirm a high level of grassroots autonomy capacity in the process where residents took the lead in directly considering and selecting agendas to solve village problems,” and added, “We will continue to actively support residents’ activities to create a warm village where no one is left out.”
