3556 Vaccine Adverse Reactions Over Two Days... Causality Unconfirmed for 3 Deaths
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] As COVID-19 vaccinations progress, the number of reported adverse reactions after vaccination continues to increase.
According to the COVID-19 Vaccination Response Promotion Team (Promotion Team) on the 4th, a total of 3,556 new cases suspected of adverse reactions after vaccination were reported to health authorities over the two days from the 2nd to the previous day.
By vaccine type, there were 1,825 cases for Moderna, 1,641 for Pfizer, 83 for AstraZeneca, and 7 for Janssen. By date, 2,526 cases were reported on the 2nd and 1,030 cases on the previous day.
There were 3 new death reports. One person had received the AstraZeneca vaccine, one the Pfizer vaccine, and the remaining one the Moderna vaccine. The causal relationship between vaccination and death has not yet been confirmed. The Promotion Team plans to verify the association through expert evaluation.
Reports suspected of anaphylaxis, a severe systemic allergic reaction, increased by 6 cases. Three cases were reported for Pfizer and three for Moderna.
An additional 48 cases of "special interest adverse reactions," which include intensive care unit admissions, life-threatening conditions, permanent disabilities, and sequelae, were reported (31 for Pfizer, 13 for Moderna, and 4 for AstraZeneca).
The remaining 3,499 cases were classified as general adverse reactions, showing symptoms such as muscle pain, headache, fever, and chills.
Reports suspected of adverse reactions related to heterologous vaccination, where the first dose was AstraZeneca and the second dose was Pfizer, increased by 22 cases, bringing the cumulative total to 6,387. Among the 22 new cases, there were no deaths or suspected anaphylaxis cases; all were general adverse reactions. Heterologous vaccination adverse reactions are counted redundantly within the total adverse reaction reports.
Since the start of vaccinations in Korea on February 26 of this year, the cumulative number of suspected adverse reaction reports has reached 286,942. Compared to the cumulative number of vaccinations administered as of midnight that day (65,282,635 doses), this represents about 0.44%.
The reporting rates of adverse reactions relative to the number of vaccinations by vaccine type are 0.58% for Janssen, 0.55% for Moderna, 0.52% for AstraZeneca, and 0.36% for Pfizer.
As of midnight that day, the cumulative number of death reports totaled 716. By vaccine type, there were 373 for Pfizer, 309 for AstraZeneca, 23 for Moderna, and 11 for Janssen.
