Gangjin-gun Achieves Success in Selection for Byeongyeong-myeon Urban Regeneration New Deal Project Competition

Secured 14.1 Billion KRW in Project Funds... Focused Revitalization of a Street in Seongnam-ri, Byeongyeong-myeon

[Gangjin＝Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-su] Gangjin-gun, Jeollanam-do, has secured a total project cost of 14.1 billion KRW (70% national and provincial funds, 30% county funds, and 800 million KRW in funds) after Byeongyeong-myeon’s urban regeneration New Deal project was finally selected in the ‘2021 Urban Regeneration New Deal Project Contest’ hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

According to the county on the 1st, the Byeongyeong-myeon urban regeneration New Deal project, under the theme ‘Reply! Byeongyeong 600,’ dreams of reviving the once glorious Byeongyeong. The project covers an area of 154,000㎡ around a street in Seongnam-ri, Byeongyeong-myeon, and will be promoted over four years starting next year, focusing on the Byeongyeong downtown area and Byeongyeong Market.

During the preparation process for the project application, the county made efforts to reflect various opinions in the project plan with active interest and participation from residents.

In particular, the experience of the small-scale regeneration project promoted in 2018 played a significant role in demonstrating a strong sense of ownership regarding regional regeneration to the evaluation committee.

Also, by proactively purchasing three old Nonghyup warehouse buildings and other project sites, consulting experts, and signing win-win agreements with related organizations and groups, the county was able to respond systematically and strategically to the contest and be finally selected.

The main project contents include renovation of old houses, creation of themed streets through the maintenance of a single alley, establishment of the Byeongyeong DIT (Do It Together) Culture Center, creation of the Byeongyeong Community Care Sarangbang, establishment of the Byeongyeong Village Hotel, creation of youth startup spaces within Byeongyeong Jangok, operation of experience and tour programs utilizing Byeongyeong’s historical and cultural resources, and resident urban regeneration university and resident proposal contest projects.

The Byeongyeong-myeon urban regeneration New Deal project will officially start next year and is expected to revitalize the local economy through housing environment improvement, enhancement of culture and care welfare by creating living SOC, job and income creation, and to be reborn as the top tourism hub area in Jeollanam-do.

County Governor Lee Seung-ok said, “Following Gangjin-eup, Byeongyeong-myeon has been selected for the large-scale urban regeneration New Deal project, and the major directions of Gangjin-gun’s urban regeneration strategy are gradually being completed. Since this result was achieved through residents’ participation and passion, we will focus administrative power to breathe new life into the area and make it a regeneration project with high urban competitiveness.”
