Climate Change Experts and COP28 Hosting Task Force Attend
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Busan City has begun preparing strategies to attract the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28).
Busan City announced that it will hold a kickoff meeting for the "COP28 Busan Attraction Strategy Development and Proposal Preparation" project at 10 a.m. on the 1st in the small conference room on the 12th floor of City Hall.
The meeting will be attended by the COP28 Busan attraction task force (TF), composed of related organizations including Busan City, Busan Regional Meteorological Administration, APEC Climate Center, Busan Institute, Busan Tourism Organization, and BEXCO, as well as climate change experts.
This project aims to identify the necessity and differentiated attraction strategies for COP28 Busan in preparation for the government's domestic host city competition.
Based on the hosting conditions guidelines of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the project will analyze Busan's infrastructure and environment and prepare supplementary measures. The project is scheduled to proceed over six months until February next year.
Busan City plans to prepare a proposal reflecting diverse opinions from experts and citizens, develop strategies that differentiate it from competing cities to successfully attract COP28 to Busan, and secure momentum to realize a leading carbon-neutral city by 2050.
Mayor Park Hyung-jun of Busan said, "Busan has already been implementing climate change response and adaptation policies, including incorporating the climate crisis into the theme of Expo 2030 Busan and establishing a new city vision as a 'Green Smart City' to move toward a Busan-style carbon-neutral city."
Mayor Park emphasized, "Busan is the 5th largest global MICE city in Asia and 13th in the world, making it an optimal city to host large-scale international conventions. Therefore, Busan is the best location to host the 28th Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention."
The United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties is an official conference held by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and is a large-scale international event attended by about 20,000 people from 197 countries worldwide.
The government confirmed COP28 as a national event in July last year and officially expressed its intention to host it at the P4G Seoul Summit in May.
