“Jeonju ‘Seonmichon 2.0’ Direction!”
‘Seminar on Urban Planning Management Directions for Seonmi Village 2.0’ Held
[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Experts gathered in one place to explore future management plans for Seonmi Village in Jeonju City, which has transformed from a red-light district into a space for culture, arts, and human rights.
The Jeonbuk Branch of the Korea Land and Urban Planning Association (Chairman Kim Jin) and Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation (LX) held a seminar titled "Seonmi Village 2.0 Urban Planning Management Directions" on the 29th at the Daul Madang of the Jeonju Urban Innovation Center, attended by association members and the Seonmi Village Maintenance Private Council members.
This seminar was organized to share the achievements of the Seonmi Village cultural regeneration project so far and to explore the future direction and revitalization plans of Seonmi Village together with urban planning experts.
At the seminar, Jang Myung-soo, Honorary President of Jeonbuk National University, delivered a keynote speech on the topic "The Status of Jeonju City in the National Territory."
Additionally, Park Jung-won, Director of UB Urban Research Institute, and Hwang Ji-wook, Professor of Urban Engineering at Jeonbuk National University, gave presentations on "Seonmi Village 1.0 Achievements and Future Tasks" and "Urban Planning Management Directions for the Seonmi Village Area," respectively.
Following the presentations, a comprehensive discussion was held, chaired by Lee Woo-jong, President of Cheongwoon University.
The discussion included urban regeneration experts, artists, women's rights activists, the village management cooperative Indi, and local residents, who gathered opinions on various ways to further revitalize Seonmi Village by strengthening its cultural and artistic infrastructure and expanding community activities.
Jeonju City plans to actively review the opinions presented at this seminar and incorporate LX's feedback to establish the basic direction for Seonmi Village 2.0 in the future.
Meanwhile, since 2014 until last year, Jeonju City has been promoting the Seonmi Village cultural regeneration project, transforming the red-light district in Seonosong-dong into a space for women's rights and culture and arts.
In particular, the city purchased abandoned and vacant houses and sex work establishments in the area to create △ Mulgyul Narrative (Art Bookstore) △ City Garden (Village Garden) △ Gender Equality Jeonju Commons Field (Resident Cooperation Communication Space) △ Nosong News Museum (Village History Museum) △ Upcycling Center Dasibom △ Unexpected Art Museum △ Amazing Art Space, and has made efforts to brighten the dark environment characteristic of red-light districts by installing security and street lights and maintaining street trees.
