COVID-19 Cases Surge... 2,038 Confirmed by 6 PM, 427 More Than Yesterday
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seon-ae]The number of new COVID-19 cases is surging again.
According to the quarantine authorities, Seoul city, and other local governments, from midnight to 6 p.m. on the 28th, a total of 2,038 new COVID-19 positive cases were confirmed nationwide.
This is 427 more than the 1,611 cases at the same time the previous day.
Compared to the mid-day tally of 1,093 cases last Tuesday (September 21), it is 945 more. Especially, if the current trend continues, there is a high possibility of breaking the record for the highest number of cases on a Tuesday. The previous highest Tuesday record was 2,221 cases, based on the final tally on the second Tuesday of last month (August 10, announced on August 11 at midnight).
This means the 'highest daily record' continues day after day. Looking at the regions where cases were reported on this day, the metropolitan area accounted for 1,471 cases (72.2%), and non-metropolitan areas accounted for 567 cases (27.8%).
By city and province, Gyeonggi had 747 cases, Seoul 578, Incheon 146, Daegu 102, Gyeongbuk 85, Gyeongnam 80, Chungbuk 71, Chungnam 67, Busan 50, Daejeon 24, Gwangju 22, Jeonbuk 20, Gangwon 18, Ulsan 13, Jeonnam 8, Jeju 5, and Sejong 2.
New cases were reported in all 17 cities and provinces nationwide.
Since there is still time left until midnight when the tally closes, the number of new cases announced at midnight on the 29th is expected to increase further, reaching at least the 2,700 range or possibly even higher.
The previous day, after 6 p.m., 678 more cases were added, closing at a final count of 2,289 cases.
The fourth wave, which began in early July, has continued for nearly three months without showing signs of abating.
The daily number of cases has remained in the four-digit range for 84 consecutive days since July 1 (1,211 cases), and the 29th will mark the 85th day.
Looking at the new cases reported over the past week from the 22nd to this day, the daily counts were 1,720 → 1,715 → 2,431 → 3,271 → 2,770 → 2,383 → 2,289, with all but two days exceeding 2,000 cases, and some days reaching into the 3,000s.
The average daily number over the week was about 2,368 cases, with locally transmitted cases averaging around 2,345.
