Chuseok Holiday '119 Firefighting Activities' Up 22% Compared to Last Year
Structure and emergency dispatches increased by 35% and 20% respectively compared to the previous year
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The National Fire Agency announced on the 23rd that the number of firefighting activities during this Chuseok holiday increased by 22.1% compared to last year.
According to the National Fire Agency, the average daily number of fires during the holiday was 71, similar to last year, but rescue dispatches averaged 937 per day, up 35% from 694 last year, and emergency medical dispatches averaged 5,211 per day, up 20% from 4,330 last year. The number of deaths caused by fires decreased from 3 last year to 2, while property damage increased by 171% to 4.355 billion KRW compared to last year.
Major fires during the holiday period included an unexplained fire on the 20th at a food processing factory's product shipment passage in Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do, which destroyed a forklift and three rapid freezing devices. On the 22nd, an unexplained fire at Suyeong Paldo Market in Suyeong-gu, Busan, damaged four stores.
Multiple traffic accidents also occurred consecutively. On the 18th, the start of the holiday, a collision between a passenger car and two buses on the southbound lanes of the Gyeongbu Expressway near Hwaseong-si resulted in 10 minor injuries. On Chuseok day, the 21st, on a national road in Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam-do, a vehicle crossing the center line first collided with the side of an oncoming vehicle and then had a head-on collision with a following bus, causing 11 casualties (1 death, 1 serious injury, 9 minor injuries).

A National Fire Agency official stated, "This Chuseok, quarantine standards were somewhat relaxed compared to last year, leading to increased movement and activities among the public, which also increased rescue and emergency dispatches," and urged active COVID-19 testing to prevent a rapid spread of COVID-19 after Chuseok.
