Former Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun Withdraws from Democratic Party Presidential Primary (Comprehensive)
No Intention to Support Other Candidates
However, "Attitude Toward the Success and Victory of the Democratic Party Will Not Change"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Jeong Se-gyun, a presidential candidate from the ruling party, announced on the 13th that he would withdraw from the presidential primary race. Jeong, appearing at the National Assembly communication office in the afternoon, wore a suit and had a stern expression. He said, "I bow my head in gratitude to the many people who have supported me despite my shortcomings for a long time," and added, "From today onward, I will return to being an ordinary party member and serve diligently for a united Democratic Party and a new Republic of Korea, repaying the grace I have received from the country, the people, and the party." Present with him were camp spokesperson Assemblyman Jo Seung-rae and Jeong Se-gyun faction members Kim Min-seok and Kim Young-joo.
The Jeong Se-gyun camp convened an emergency meeting on the same day to discuss countermeasures following the results of the first round of the electorate vote and reached this conclusion. It appears that the decision to withdraw was influenced by the disappointing results in the first Super Week, including the Daegu and Gyeongbuk votes held on the 11th and 12th, where expectations had predicted a third-place finish but the actual performance fell short.
He did not disclose any intention to support other candidates. After the press conference, Jeong told reporters, "What role do you plan to take in the upcoming primary?" and replied, "I am not considering any specific role. My consistent attitude of dedicating my life to the success and victory of the Democratic Party will not change going forward."
