The Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office requested the maximum sentence of death during Kim's sentencing trial held on the 13th at the Seoul Northern District Court Criminal Division 13 (Presiding Judge Oh Gwon-cheol).
The prosecution explained the reason for the demand, stating, "Considering that the defendant killed three victims and committed other crimes during the course of the offense, there is no room to consider any sentence other than the harshest punishment. It is inevitable to impose the severest sentence on the defendant to hold him strictly accountable and to prevent the recurrence of such heinous crimes that deny life."
Kim's defense attorney said, "(The defendant) wants the facts regarding the crimes he committed to be confirmed and to receive appropriate punishment. However, considering the court's finding that the defendant's statement that he did not plan in advance to kill all the victims' families is truthful, and that he attempted to take his own life several times without any intention to flee, we ask for a judgment that reflects these circumstances."
In his final statement, Kim said, "My heart aches when I think of the deceased in heaven. I will live with a lifelong sense of guilt and a repentant heart. I am truly sorry to the bereaved families."
Kim is accused of visiting an apartment in Junggye-dong, Nowon-gu, Seoul, on March 23 and sequentially murdering three women in a mother-daughter relationship. He committed this crime because A, whom he met through an online game last November, refused to meet and did not respond to his contact.
The prosecution indicted Kim in April on five charges including murder, special trespassing, and violation of the Minor Offenses Act. Throughout the trial, Kim has claimed that he did not plan to kill A's family and that the crime was impulsive. However, the prosecution judged that Kim had thoroughly planned the crime in advance.
