Full-Scale Promotion of Electrification of Gwangju Songjeong-Suncheon Gyeongjeon Line
Reflection of 120 Billion KRW National Government Budget Proposal
[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The electrification of the Gyeongjeon Line from Songjeong, Gwangju to Suncheon, Jeonnam will be actively promoted.
Jeonnam Province announced on the 8th that the national budget of 120 billion KRW for the Gyeongjeon Line electrification project connecting Gwangju Songjeong, Boseong, and Suncheon has been reflected in the government budget plan, providing momentum for the project, and that the national budget for the railway sector in 2022 reached a record high of over 400 billion KRW.
The Gyeongjeon Line electrification project is a railway construction project with a total length of 122.2 km and a budget of 1.7703 trillion KRW to operate semi-high-speed trains with a maximum speed of 250 km/h.
After completing the preliminary feasibility re-investigation by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance in 2019, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is currently establishing the basic plan, which is expected to be completed within this year.
Following the project cost of 29.7 billion KRW this year, a large amount of the 2022 budget has been reflected, and the section from Boseong to Suncheon will be prioritized for turnkey construction.
After the opening of the Boseong to Imseong-ri railway scheduled for 2023, once the Boseong to Suncheon section is completed, the living zone from Mokpo to Busan will be within two hours.
Active human and material exchanges between Yeongnam and Honam are expected to greatly contribute to regional balanced development and east-west harmony.
The railway budget for Jeonnam Province reflected in the 2022 government budget plan is 417.4 billion KRW, an increase of 5.8% from this year's budget of 394.7 billion KRW.
Although the project cost decreased due to the completion of the Boseong to Imseong-ri railway project in 2022, the province secured the largest-ever railway budget by reflecting a large amount of construction costs for the Honam Line and Gyeongjeon Line railway projects through its efforts.
By line, 261.7 billion KRW was secured for the second phase of the Honam High-Speed Railway project from Gwangju Songjeong to Mokpo, aiming for completion in 2025.
123 billion KRW was secured for the Boseong to Imseong-ri railway project and 23.4 billion KRW for the Jinju to Gwangyang Gyeongjeon Line electrification project, which are scheduled to be completed in 2022 and opened in 2023.
