Mass COVID-19 Cases Among USFK; Breakthrough Infections in ROK Forces
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] A large number of COVID-19 cases have been confirmed among the US Forces Korea personnel, and breakthrough infections have been identified among our military soldiers.
According to the US Forces Korea Command on the 31st, 40 individuals including soldiers, family members, and staff tested positive for the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) between the 26th and 27th.
At the US Air Force base in Osan, Gyeonggi Province, 18 soldiers and 1 family member tested positive, and 18 soldiers on short-term assignments and 1 staff member also tested positive in pre-departure tests before returning home. Including these cases, more than 80 COVID-19 cases have been reported at the Osan Air Force base this month.
Two additional cases were confirmed within our military. A reservist soldier in Seoul tested positive after being tested due to contact with an infected acquaintance, and an army officer in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, tested positive in a pre-leave return test. All of them had received the recommended number of COVID-19 vaccine doses and were confirmed as 'breakthrough infections' after two weeks, bringing the total number of such cases within the military to 65.

As a result, the cumulative number of confirmed cases related to US Forces Korea has risen to 1,337, and the cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases within the military is 1,617.
