ISU Junior Grand Prix Rounds 1 and 2, South Korea Wins Consecutive Medals
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] The Korea Skating Union announced on the 29th that South Korean athletes won valuable medals at the 1st and 2nd rounds of the 2021-22 ISU Junior Grand Prix Series held in Courchevel, France.
Im Haena and Ye Kwan Cho scored 52.22 points in the Ice Dance Rhythm Dance and combined a Technical Element Score (TES) of 48.25 and a Program Component Score (PCS) of 40.80 in the Free Dance, totaling 89.05 points, achieving an overall score of 144.27 at the 1st round of the 2021-2022 ISU Figure Skating Junior Grand Prix held in Courchevel, France from the 18th to the 21st. They placed 3rd behind Katarina Wolfkostin-Jeffrey Chen (USA, 165.01 points) and Miku Makita-Tyler Gunara (Canada, 149.39 points).
This is the first-ever medal for South Korean athletes in Ice Dance at the ISU Grand Prix Series, including both senior and junior levels.
At the 2nd round held from the 25th to the 28th, Kim Chaeyeon (Taerang Middle School) stood out. Kim scored 66.90 points in the Women's Singles Short Program, and in the Free Skating, she earned a TES of 67.94, a PCS of 57.62, and received a 1-point deduction, totaling 124.56 points and an overall score of 191.46.
Kim Chaeyeon placed 2nd behind Isabeau Levito (USA, 202.35 points), winning the silver medal and becoming the third Korean athlete to medal in their Junior Grand Prix debut. Previously, Yuna Kim (retired, 2004) and Yeonjeong Park (Hagye Middle School, 2019) had also secured medals in their debut performances.

After the athletes' competitions concluded, Yoon Hong-geun, President of the Korea Skating Union, called France to express gratitude and congratulations to the participating coaches and athletes for their efforts and achievements amid the difficulties caused by COVID-19. He also promised full support from the Union for the medium- to long-term development of Korean figure skating and for the athletes.
