Namwon-si Completes Disaster Relief Fund Payment to Farms Affected by Abnormal Weather
[Namwon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeong Young-gwon] Namwon City, Jeonbuk, announced on the 26th that it has paid disaster relief funds amounting to 630 million KRW to farms affected by the cold wave in January and the cold damage in April to help them engage in stable farming.
Due to abnormal weather, an unprecedented cold wave occurred in early January with a minimum temperature dropping to minus 19.7 degrees Celsius, and cold damage occurred in mid-April with temperatures dropping to minus 2 degrees Celsius, causing tree death damage and massive damage to fruit trees due to cold damage during the April flowering period.
According to a detailed survey of abnormal low-temperature damage, 646 farms covering 217.3 hectares were affected, with significant damage to Namwon’s representative fruits such as peaches, grapes, apples, and persimmons.
The city also received applications for disaster management funds amounting to 1.2 billion KRW from 85 farms experiencing difficulties in agricultural management due to the two natural disasters and provided support to facilitate their smooth return to farming.
Additionally, to prevent low-temperature damage and minimize losses, the city plans to introduce a support project after conducting a demand survey for wind fans next year and provide subsidies to farms. It also plans to allocate budget for necessary chemicals to prevent low-temperature damage and supply them to all orchard areas.
A Namwon city official stated, "As the frequency of natural disasters increases year by year, we are guiding all farmers that subscribing to crop disaster insurance is not an option but a necessity to minimize income loss caused by disasters," and added, "We urge farmers of all crop types to actively subscribe to crop disaster insurance to engage in stable farming amid rapidly changing climate conditions."
