[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) is launching a joint purchase event for traditional markets in celebration of Chuseok, alongside Yeongsijang, Yeongdeungpo's traditional market, to revitalize the local economy suffering from stagnation.
The district has been conducting joint purchase events since last year during holiday seasons to activate traditional markets in the area, which have been struggling due to prolonged COVID-19-induced consumer sentiment decline and the entry of large supermarkets.
Following the joint purchase event for Seollal in January, five representative traditional markets in Yeongdeungpo-gu will participate again this Chuseok, selling distinctive signature products from each market.
The items available for joint purchase include ▲ sesame oil, perilla oil, dried seafood, seaweed, and fresh ginseng (Yeongdeungpo Traditional Market) ▲ handmade Korean sweets (Woori Market) ▲ socks, honey, red ginseng, and mother-of-pearl mirrors (Yeongsin Shopping Center) ▲ melons, Cheonhyehyang citrus, apples, and pears (Yeongdeungpo Agricultural Market) ▲ cosmetics (Daerim Central Market). Customers can purchase various Chuseok ritual items and high-quality Korean agricultural products at reasonable prices.
Orders for the joint purchase can be placed from August 30 to September 10 by scanning the QR code using a mobile phone camera or the Naver app, which will direct customers to the Naver Smart Store. Ordered items will be delivered sequentially starting September 14, with free shipping provided for online purchases.
Additionally, a pop-up store will be held where customers can directly check and purchase products on-site. Notably, this Chuseok, the district plans to operate a pop-up store inside The Hyundai Seoul in Yeouido, presenting a win-win model where traditional markets and department stores coexist within the region.
The pop-up store will be open from 3 PM to 7 PM on September 7 and 8 at The Hyundai Seoul (Yeouido), and from 4 PM to 8 PM on September 9 and 10 at Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station.
This year, to attract younger customers, the district plans to promote the event through Instagram and conduct live commerce sessions that allow real-time interactive communication with customers.
The district expects that these sales strategies suited for the untact (contactless) era will enhance the image of traditional markets, create new loyal customers, and invigorate the local economy.
Meanwhile, to boost sales at traditional markets, the district developed a joint brand called ‘Yeongsijang’ through collaboration with local traditional market merchants. Under the Yeongsijang name, various excellent products reflecting the unique characteristics of traditional markets are being introduced to revitalize the declining alleyway commercial areas.
