South Korea and Colombia Agree to Cooperate Across Environmental Fields Including Climate Response, Biodiversity, and Water Management
Environmental Cooperation Agreement between the Ministers of Environment of Both Countries
[Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] On the afternoon of the 25th, the Ministry of Environment held a bilateral meeting with Carlos Eduardo Corea Escaf, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of Colombia, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul (located in Jongno-gu, Seoul), and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on cooperation across environmental fields including climate response, biodiversity, and water management.
This bilateral meeting was arranged at the request of the Embassy of Colombia in Korea following the visit of Colombian President Iv?n Duque M?rquez to Korea.
This MOU is a renewed agreement reflecting changed policy conditions, replacing the environmental cooperation MOU signed during the visit of former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos in 2011.
Through the signing of this MOU, both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation across all environmental areas and shared plans for collaboration to ensure the successful hosting of the 3rd P4G Summit to be held in Colombia in 2023.

At the meeting, Minister of Environment Han Jeong-ae promised that Korea will continue to contribute to uniting the international community’s commitment to carbon neutrality by acting as a bridge among the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and proposed ongoing sharing of experiences related to hosting the P4G Summit. In response, Minister Carlos emphasized active cooperation between the two countries for carbon neutrality implementation at the 26th UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP26) scheduled to be held in the UK at the end of October this year, as well as at the P4G Summit. The two ministers then pledged to strengthen the existing environmental cooperation built since the signing of the 2011 environmental cooperation MOU and to expand cooperation into various fields.
