On the 24th, Gwangju City announced that it will build an outdoor stage and performance hall with 800 seats on the site of the former swimming pool within Sajik Park.
The day before, the Sajik Park permanent performance hall project passed the final central investment review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
The project budget is 19 billion KRW (8.2 billion KRW from the national government and 10.8 billion KRW from the city), which will be used to create the outdoor performance stage and auxiliary facilities, an external parking lot with 130 spaces, surrounding pedestrian paths, and access roads.
To promote the project, the city finalized the basic plan for the Sajik Park permanent performance hall in December last year, passed the Urban Park Committee review earlier this year, and applied for the central investment review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in March.
Prior to this, since 2010, plans to create the ‘Asia Music Park’ have been underway, including the construction of walking trails in Sajik Park, the Sajik Park Public Art Project, the Sajik Observatory Tower, and the Sajik Public Design Project.
The creation of the permanent outdoor performance hall is a core project of the plan, and much effort has been devoted to advancing it.
The site for the permanent outdoor performance hall is located within an urban park with beautiful natural surroundings and optimal conditions for a performance venue, hosting many music festivals, and there has been a steady demand for a formalized performance hall for a long time.
Gwangju City plans to enter a design competition after the Architectural Committee review in the second half of this year, complete the basic and detailed design services by the first half of next year, start construction in the second half, and complete it by the end of 2023.
