The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) announced on the 22nd at 9 a.m. that Omais is moving north-northwest at a speed of 21 km/h in the sea about 350 km southwest of Okinawa, Japan.
The central pressure is 998 hPa, the maximum wind speed is 21 m/s, and the radius of strong winds is 160 km.
On the previous day, the KMA had expected Omais to weaken into a tropical depression in the distant sea south of Jeju Island, but it revised its forecast to landfall in South Korea.
The KMA explained that the forecast was changed because the sea surface temperature is high and the typhoon is small in size, creating favorable conditions for the typhoon to maintain its strength.
Omais is expected to enter the sea south-southwest of Seogwipo on the morning of the 23rd, pass through the sea south of Gwangju in the evening of the same day, make landfall near the southern coast overnight, and then transform into an extratropical cyclone by dawn on the 24th, moving out to the sea northeast of Ulleungdo.
During the passage of the typhoon, very strong winds exceeding 100 km/h in maximum instantaneous wind speed will blow in Jeju Island and the southern regions, and waves higher than 5 meters may occur in the southern sea, requiring thorough preparation.
From the 23rd to the 25th, the typhoon, stationary front, and low pressure system will have a combined effect, bringing rainfall of 50 to 70 mm per hour nationwide.
Especially until the 24th, very heavy rain up to 400 mm is expected in the southern regions, raising concerns about landslides and flooding.

After the 26th, a high pressure system in the south and low pressure in the north will form, and the stationary front near Chungcheong Province and the southern regions will persist, leading to periodic rain nationwide until the end of August.
