Working 4 Hours a Day, 2-3 Times a Week, Earning 324,000 Won a Month... Shopping Bags Made at Garibong-dong Shared Workshop... Two Convenience Stores Run by Seniors Also Established
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Guro-gu (Mayor Lee Sung) is creating unique job opportunities for senior citizens.
Guro-gu is conducting various job projects in four fields: public interest activities, social services, employment placement, and market-type jobs through the Guro Senior Club (Director Yang Im-soon).
Among these, the market-type job project, which provides service sector jobs, is particularly eye-catching.
As part of the market-type job project, the Guro Senior Club recently opened a unique "pizza shop" in Hang-dong, Guro-gu, where seniors work. A total of 18 seniors take turns working, making and selling pizzas themselves.
They work 4 hours a day, 2 to 3 times a week, and receive a monthly activity allowance of 324,000 KRW.
A Guro Senior Club official explained, "We opened the pizza shop to create good jobs for seniors," adding, "The profits are used for seniors' wages and purchasing ingredients."
At the ‘Wing Wing Center’ in Garibong-dong, a joint workshop called the ‘Dream Sharing Project Group’ is also operated for seniors. More than 20 seniors aged 60 and over make paper shopping bags twice a week for 4 to 5 hours a day. The activity allowance is about 300,000 KRW for 34 hours of work per month, with additional pay for overtime.
The Guro Senior Club has also established convenience stores operated by seniors at two locations in Seoul. Seniors handle tasks such as product display and sales, store cleaning, and inventory management.
According to a Senior Club official, there is fierce competition to apply for convenience store work due to high demand.
