Minbyun: "Lee Jae-yong's Parole Is an Unfair Privilege for a Socially Special Class"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] The Lawyers for a Democratic Society (Minbyun) criticized the parole decision for Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong on the 9th as an "unfair privilege for a special social class."
Minbyun issued a statement that day, saying, "Paroling Vice Chairman Lee undermines the original intent of the policy to expand parole."
Minbyun pointed out, "The criminal facts of Vice Chairman Lee involve embezzling 8.6 billion won of Samsung company funds to bribe the president. If a person who committed such a serious crime is easily paroled simply because he is a chaebol, it will seriously damage the fairness of our judicial system."

Minbyun stated, "Considering that the prosecution customarily does not submit consent opinions for parole when trying other cases, and that there are almost no precedents of parole being granted while trials for serious crimes are ongoing, the Parole Review Board's approval of the release can only be seen as a special privilege for chaebols."
