Yeosu City, Yi Sun-sin Jadang Residence Designated as Jeollanam-do Cultural Property

Ochungsa, Jeong Daesu Bi, and 3 Other Sites Designated as Cultural Properties by Jeollanam-do

[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Sim Kyung-taek] The 'Yi Sun-sin Jadang Residence' located in Ungcheon-dong, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do, has been designated and announced as a cultural asset by Jeollanam-do (Cultural Material No. 295).

According to Yeosu City, the 'Yeosu Ochungsa and Yi Sun-sin Jadang Residence' located in Ungcheon-dong have been managed as city-designated cultural heritage since 2013. After review by the Jeollanam-do Cultural Heritage Committee, they were designated and announced as Jeollanam-do 'Cultural Materials' on the 5th.

The newly designated cultural assets are related to Yeosu Ochungsa and include three sites?Ochungsa, the Jeong Dae-su Monument, and Yi Sun-sin Jadang Residence?designated as a single cultural asset.

was originally established as Gakoksa in 1847, demolished in 1868, and rebuilt in its current location in 1923 as Ochungsa (three bays wide at the front, one bay deep). It is a patriotic historic site enshrining five loyal subjects: Admiral Yi Sun-sin, Jeong Cheol, Jeong Rin, Jeong Chun, and Jeong Dae-su.

is an epigraphic record of General Jeong Dae-su’s participation in the Imjin War and the Jeongyu War. The inscription was written by Prime Minister Hong Sun-mok, and the monument was erected in 1881, recognized for its historical value.

A city official stated, “Since 2019, we have been working together with the Changwon Jeong clan, Wolcheon Gongpa branch, to designate this as a Jeollanam-do cultural asset,” adding, “We are very honored that the city-designated cultural heritage No. 1 ‘The Place Where Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s Mother Lived’ and No. 2 ‘Ochungsa’ have been simultaneously elevated to Jeollanam-do Cultural Materials, and we will continue to make efforts to preserve and manage them.”
