[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] The Chinese government has belatedly lodged a stern protest following U.S. President Joe Biden's criticism on the 5th (local time) regarding the enactment of the Hong Kong National Security Law and his remarks on Hong Kong human rights issues.
According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 9th, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying expressed this position in a Q&A format with reporters the previous day concerning President Biden's statements on Hong Kong and the signing of the memorandum.
Earlier, on the 5th, President Biden signed a memorandum that suspends the deportation of Hong Kong residents residing in the U.S. for 18 months, stating, "Providing a safe haven for residents in Hong Kong who have been deprived of their freedom promotes U.S. interests in the region."
Spokesperson Hua Chunying pointed out, "This U.S. memorandum attacks and smears the Hong Kong National Security Law (Hong Kong Security Law) and China's governance policies over Hong Kong," adding, "The United States is once again interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs with malicious expressions."
Hua stated, "China expresses strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to this and has already lodged stern representations with the United States."
When China protests on specific issues through diplomatic channels, it uses the phrase 'lodged stern representations.'
Spokesperson Hua Chunying criticized, "Through the Hong Kong Security Law, Hong Kong has been restored and just and lawful rights and interests have been provided to Hong Kong residents," adding, "The U.S. claim of providing a safe haven to Hong Kong residents is groundless and intended to undermine Hong Kong's stability and obstruct China's development."
Hua said, "China urges the United States to respect China's sovereignty and abide by international law," and "hopes that interference in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs will cease, and that anti-China and anti-Hong Kong forces will not be tolerated in any form."
He further warned, "If the United States does not abide by this, it will be shooting itself in the foot and will suffer great losses in its interests related to Hong Kong."
