According to Haenam County on the 9th, the Myeongnyang Marine Cable Car is the first marine cable car installed at a historic site in Korea. It was constructed with a total of 26 cabins (13 crystal cabins), each seating 10 passengers, spanning approximately 1 km over the Uldolmok Strait, the site of Admiral Yi Sun-sin's victory in the Battle of Myeongnyang. The total project cost was about 36 billion KRW.
This comprehensive test operation is the final stage before opening, involving thorough inspections of the cable car facilities and passenger safety. Currently, the top engineers from Doppelmayr, a century-old company leading the global cable car market, have been dispatched to conduct inspections under strict and rigorous standards.
Simulations are being performed to prepare for various situations that may occur when passengers are onboard, and detailed checks of the entire system are being completed. Once the final safety inspection by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority is passed, full-scale operations will commence.
A company official stated, “Despite the challenging business conditions due to COVID-19, we proceeded with construction in close consultation with local governments to ensure the opening. The opening of the Myeongnyang Marine Cable Car will provide tourists with a meaningful opportunity to experience a historic site from the sky, making it a representative domestic travel destination, which is very significant.”
When the cable car opens at the end of August, coinciding with the final summer vacation season, it is expected to become a popular domestic summer travel spot. More than one million tourists are anticipated annually, and it is projected to quickly emerge as a representative landmark of Jeollado travel destinations.
