Customized Pest Control for Residents of Ssokbang in Donui-dong, Jongno-gu
Planned 'Air Conditioner Installation Support Project' for Donuidong and Changsin-dong Gosiwon Areas to Help Enjoy a Comfortable Summer
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jongno-gu (Mayor Kim Young-jong) is making efforts to improve the living environment and promote the health of residents in jjokbang (small, cramped rooms) areas during the hot summer season.
As part of this, from August to December this year, a customized pest control project for jjokbang areas will be implemented. Jjokbang areas are characterized by narrow and poor living conditions where most residents live, and buildings are densely packed within narrow alleys, creating favorable conditions for pests to breed and be active.
In particular, the district expedited this project considering the rapid increase in pest populations due to the continued hot and humid weather caused by the heatwave.
The target area is the jjokbang district in Donui-dong, where about 540 residents live in 85 buildings. In the case of the jjokbang area in Changsin-dong, related projects have been carried out through external sponsorships, so Donui-dong was selected as the target area for this project.
Customized emergency pest control services will be provided by visiting each household and using and supplying pesticides suitable for the site, and related educational materials such as ‘hygiene and quarantine leaflets’ will also be distributed to help residents recognize the importance of personal hygiene.
In addition, the district will promote an 'air conditioner installation support project' in the jjokbang areas of Donui-dong and Changsin-dong to prevent heat-related illnesses among residents and provide a comfortable living environment.
On the 6th, to discuss electrical safety and fire safety issues related to air conditioner installation, officials from related departments visited the site directly and plan to complete the selection of beneficiaries by next week.
The district is also operating an alcohol addiction recovery program focused on jjokbang residents. Any resident with a high level of alcohol dependence or abuse can visit the Donui-dong Jjokbang Counseling Center every Wednesday to participate. A team of professionals, including center specialists and recovery counselors, leads a non-face-to-face abstinence motivation reinforcement program, which has received positive responses.

Mayor Kim Young-jong emphasized, “We are striving to protect the body and mind of jjokbang residents and improve their quality of life, from improving living conditions to mental health,” adding, “In addition to the heatwave, we are paying special attention to preventing infectious diseases by providing quarantine supplies to jjokbang residents in response to COVID-19.”
