Korean Companies Ranked No.1 Globally in Five Sectors Including Smartphones Last Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] It has been confirmed that the number of fields in which Korean companies ranked first in the world in major industries last year decreased by two compared to 2019, totaling five fields.
According to the results of the 2020 "Major Products and Services Market Share Survey" by Japan's Nihon Keizai on the 6th, the five fields in which Korean companies ranked first in the world last year were NAND flash memory, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, DRAM, ultra-thin TVs, and smartphones.
Samsung Electronics ranked first in all these fields, while LG Display (OLED panels), SK Hynix (DRAM), and LG Electronics (ultra-thin TVs) ranked second.
In the 2019 survey, Korea ranked first in seven fields, tying with Japan for third place, but this time the overall ranking fell below Japan.
Japanese companies also ranked first in seven fields in 2019. These included automobiles (Toyota), digital cameras (Canon), A3 laser copiers and multifunction devices (Ricoh), portable lithium-ion batteries (ATL), motorcycles (Honda), CMOS sensors (Sony Semiconductor), and polarizing plates (Sumitomo Chemical Group).
The rise of China in some industries affected Korea's rankings.
Hyundai Heavy Industries was ranked first in the world in 2019 but fell to second place last year, overtaken by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). LG Display, which was first in LCD panels, lost the lead to China's BOE.
