View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) has taken steps to bridge the information gap for the information-vulnerable groups.
In particular, the ‘Dongdaemun-gu Sign Language Interpretation Center’ plans to produce and broadcast customized videos containing district news and information for the deaf starting in August, which is expected to further enhance information accessibility for the deaf community.
Currently, the Dongdaemun-gu weekly news video provided on the Dongdaemun-gu Office YouTube channel offers sign language interpretation through sign language interpreters so that hearing-impaired individuals can share useful district news together.
The district announced that to effectively deliver district news to more deaf people, it will produce videos containing customized information for the deaf through the ‘Dongdaemun-gu Sign Language Interpretation Center,’ which was expanded and relocated at the end of June.
The newly produced videos will feature sign language interpreters prominently, using not only hand shapes but also various body languages such as gestures and mouth movements to deliver district news and useful information more vividly.
Additionally, to ensure that deaf individuals do not miss out on information, the district will produce its own videos with added sign language interpretation for existing district promotional videos that did not previously include sign language interpretation and will broadcast them on YouTube. The district promotional videos with added sign language interpretation can be viewed on the YouTube channel ‘Dongdaemun-gu Sign Language Interpretation Center.’
Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “Providing equal information to the information-vulnerable groups is the starting point for a society where we live together,” and added, “We will actively support residents who have some difficulty obtaining information, such as people with disabilities and the elderly, so that they can easily access useful and new district news.”

Dongdaemun-gu publishes the ‘Braille Dongdaemun-gu Newsletter’ for the visually impaired and has established a ‘Visually Impaired Customized News’ section to increase satisfaction among the visually impaired. For the elderly, who relatively have difficulty obtaining information, the district issued the senior newsletter ‘Shinbaram Silver Dongdaemun’ in October 2011, the first of its kind among Seoul’s autonomous districts, and has published and distributed up to issue 42 to date.
