According to the Yeosu Police Station in Jeonnam on the 20th, at around 8:56 a.m. that day at Hanjae Intersection in Gwangmu-dong, Yeosu-si, Jeonnam, a passenger car delivery vehicle crossed the crosswalk and collided one after another with 10 passenger cars, injuring 12 people seriously and critically. The delivery vehicle then struck six pedestrians crossing the crosswalk, who were taken to the hospital, but three people, A (80), B (72), and C (73), died.
Mr. A and others were elderly people engaged in public work who were crossing the road with their group when the accident occurred.
They were public work personnel involved in the Beautiful Village Making Project, divided into teams from 8 a.m. that day to perform beautification tasks such as weed removal and garbage collection. At the time of the accident, it is known that Mr. A and 11 others were crossing the crosswalk to move to another work site.
The injured are receiving treatment at Jeonnam Hospital and Jeil Hospital in Yeosu, among others.
The delivery vehicle carrying six passenger cars was turning right on a downhill slope when it crossed the crosswalk, hit 10 vehicles on the opposite side in succession, and barely came to a stop.
The crosswalk where the accident occurred is frequently used by residents and merchants who use Seosi Market, resulting in significant casualties. The collision caused the cars to become entangled, turning the previously peaceful shopping street into a chaotic scene.
Yeosu City held an emergency countermeasure meeting to assess the accident situation and decided to provide support such as setting up a condolence hall and insurance assistance.
The police and fire authorities are investigating the exact cause of the accident, suspecting that the delivery vehicle’s brakes may have failed. The driver of the delivery vehicle has been booked and is under investigation for violating the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling.
