Jeonnam 22 City and County Councils Support Hosting COP28 in the South Coast and South Central Region
Adoption of Joint Proposal Presented by Jeon Chang-gon, Yeosu City Council Chairman, at the 261st Monthly Meeting on the 16th
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Sim Kyung-taek] The Council of Chairpersons of Jeonnam City and County Councils has united in support of hosting the 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) in 12 cities of the South Coast and South Central regions centered around Yeosu.
According to the Yeosu City Council in Jeonnam, at the 261st monthly meeting of the Council of Chairpersons of Jeonnam City and County Councils held in Yeongam on the 16th, the "Joint Proposal to Urge Hosting COP28 in the South Coast and South Central Regions," proposed by Jeon Chang-gon, Chairperson of Yeosu City Council, was adopted.
The main content of the proposal is for the 12 cities and counties of the South Coast and South Central regions to jointly host COP28, laying the foundation for harmony between Yeongnam and Honam and east-west integration. It also includes a request for the government to promptly select the domestic host city.
Chairperson Jeon Chang-gon explained the proposal that day and asked the chairpersons of the 22 city and county councils to support the hosting of COP28 in the South Coast and South Central regions and to engage in public promotion. The chairpersons agreed to support by adopting the urging proposal for hosting COP28 in the South Coast and South Central regions in their respective councils.
Chairperson Jeon stated, "The 12 cities and counties of the South Coast and South Central regions have been making every effort to host COP28 since 2008," and predicted, "Joint hosting of COP28 will be a global model where local governments cooperate to achieve carbon neutrality along with mutual development such as east-west harmony and regional balanced development."
Meanwhile, the Yeosu City Council has prepared a joint proposal in the name of the 12 city and county councils of the South Coast and South Central regions along with the joint proposal of the 22 city and county councils of Jeonnam.
Special Committee members including Baek In-sook, Chairperson of the COP Hosting Support Special Committee, visited the monthly meeting site that day and met with the chairpersons of five city and county councils including Suncheon, Gwangyang, Goheung, Boseong, and Gurye to collect signatures on the joint proposal. After obtaining signatures from the chairpersons of the remaining six city and county councils in Gyeongnam, the Special Committee plans to send the joint proposal to relevant government departments.
