[Exclusive] Director Han Jae-rim of 'Emergency Declaration' Sends Letter from Cannes "No Spoilers"
On-site Coverage of the 74th Cannes Film Festival
[Cannes (France) = Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] Director Han Jae-rim, who was invited to the Cannes Film Festival for the first time in his life, wrote a letter asking journalists around the world to refrain from spoilers as he unveiled "Emergency Declaration."
From the 6th (local time) to the 17th, at the 74th Cannes International Film Festival held in the southern French resort city of Cannes, Director Han Jae-rim included a heartfelt message along with the filming staff at the very front of the press release for "Emergency Declaration" distributed to journalists worldwide. Since the materials are distributed to reporters from various countries, they were produced in English, and the director's message was also written in English.
Previously, in May 2019, at the 72nd Cannes International Film Festival, Director Bong Joon-ho won an award for the film "Parasite." The festival, which resumed after 2 years and 2 months, was unusually held in July, during the summer. Unfortunately, there were no invited films in the competition section this year, but "Emergency Declaration" was invited and screened in the non-competition section at Cannes.
Ahead of the local screening in Cannes, Director Han Jae-rim introduced, "We filmed during the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus infection) period in 2020, and this summer we are having the premiere in Cannes."
He added, "'Emergency Declaration' contains spoilers that are closely related to the current situation the world is facing," and said, "We want to provide the audience waiting for the film with minimal information to maximize the fun and immersion in the story."
Director Han Jae-rim earnestly requested, "I would like to humbly ask everyone watching the film at the world premiere not to reveal important details about the plot, climax, or ending," urging restraint from spoilers.
Finally, he said, "In these unprecedented global difficulties and challenges, I hope this film brings hope and comfort to everyone watching 'Emergency Declaration.'"
Previously, Director Bong Joon-ho himself refrained from mentioning spoilers. At that time, as a director in the competition section, he attracted attention by being the first to write a message asking for spoiler restraint.
