[AKY News Poll] President Moon's Positive Ratings 'Rise'... Women Rate Higher Than Negative Evaluations
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] Positive public opinion ratings for President Moon Jae-in have risen, narrowing the gap with negative ratings to within the margin of error.
According to a public opinion survey conducted by Win-Gi Korea Consulting on behalf of Asia Economy from the 10th to the 11th, the positive evaluation of President Moon's state affairs management was 46.0% (generally doing well 15.1%, doing very well 30.8%), while the negative evaluation was 51.9% (generally doing poorly 13.7%, doing very poorly 38.2%).
This marks a 4 percentage point increase in positive ratings compared to the same survey conducted on the 26th and 27th of last month. The gap with negative ratings is 5.9 percentage points, with a margin of error of ±3.1 percentage points. President Moon's positive rating remained around 36% in April when the by-elections were held, but recovered to the 40% range starting in May, showing a noticeable upward trend in this survey.
The official start of the Democratic Party's presidential primary race and controversies over the verification of Yoon Seok-youl, the leading conservative opposition candidate and former Prosecutor General, appear to have consolidated the ruling party's support base. Notably, although the number of new COVID-19 cases surged to the 1,000s from the 6th, raising questions about government responsibility, this did not translate into a decline in President Moon's approval ratings.
Among female respondents, positive evaluations were higher at 51.0% compared to negative evaluations at 46.7%. Conversely, among males, positive evaluations were 40.9% and negative evaluations were 57.1%, showing about a 10 percentage point difference by gender.
By age group, the 40s showed the highest positive evaluation at 66.3%, followed by the 30s (54.8%), 50s (49.4%), 18-29 (36.6%), 70 and older (32.3%), and 60s (30.3%).
By region, the ratings were as follows: Gwangju and Jeolla (63.6%), Gangwon and Jeju (54.7%), Gyeonggi and Incheon (47.8%), Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (46.6%), Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungcheong (43.4%), Seoul (42.9%), and Daegu and Gyeongbuk (26.4%).
