Amid COVID-19 Spread, Japan Olympic Team of 582 Members 'Largest Ever'... Aiming for 30 Gold Medals
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] The size of the Japanese delegation participating in the Tokyo Olympics is expected to reach a record high of 582 members.
According to NHK on the 6th, 582 Japanese athletes will attend the decision ceremony online held on the same day.
The previous largest delegation was 355 Japanese athletes who participated in the Tokyo Olympics held in 1964, which has been greatly surpassed this time.
It has also increased significantly compared to the 338 members at the previous Summer Olympics, the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.
This is because team sports such as men's and women's handball and men's hockey, which had been distant from Olympic participation, are participating as the host country, and new sports such as baseball, softball, and karate have been added.
Kyodo News reported that the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) is aiming to win 30 gold medals.
Japan's record for the most gold medals is 16, achieved at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the 2004 Athens Olympics respectively.
